So much of our identity here in Southern Maryland is tied to our natural surroundings. Our story is rich with the details of a history of harvesting – both from the water and the land. Farming through the years has taken different forms here, including a time when vast tobacco plantations inhabited the landscape. We are fortunate to have three sites in the tri-county area where this history is available for us to explore. Historic Sotterley Plantation, Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum, and Thomas Stone National Historic Site have all distinctively honored the people of their plantation histories and afforded us opportunities to view those histories in uniquely different ways.

In November of 1633, 381 years ago, the Ark and the Dove left England, bound for the New World. The following March, the ships reached the Chesapeake Bay and, exploring for sites to settle, sailed up the Potomac River into St. Mary’s River. Governor Calvert purchased land from the Yaocomaco Indians, passengers and crews settled into what has become St. Mary’s City, and Maryland history began.
