The holidays in Southern Maryland are a time for families to gather and share in the bounty and fruits of their year.  Sadly, for some residents, the holidays are a time of struggle in finding a way to make ends meet.  Homelessness and poverty exist in our bountiful region, much to the disbelief of many Southern Marylanders.   Fortunately, there are many programs in place through area churches and charitable organizations to help people in need of a hot meal or food for their holiday table.  ( more... )
Caring for a family member with mental retardation or developmental disabilities can be overwhelming. Fortunately for Southern Maryland’s families, someone is here to help.  Whether you are just sorting through a diagnosis from your newborn’s pediatrician, or are trying to find the least restrictive work and home environment for an adult, the Arc of Southern Maryland is a wide network of resources for your family.  ( more... )
Indian Head, Maryland seems an unlikely spot for providing our nation with state of the art military might, but over the years this tiny town has done that and much more.  A small peninsula located on the northwestern side of Charles County, with the Potomac on one side and Mattawoman Creek on the other, it was once the home of Algonquin Indians.  A mix between marshlands and heavily treed forests, this was a perfect location for these peaceful people to fish, hunt, and live off of the fertile land.  The area would later give way to one of the countries largest ordnance testing grounds.  ( more... )
This holiday season, why not avoid all of the packed parking lots, crowded stores, and frazzled sales people by making your own gifts.  Handmade gifts, whether an elaborate project, a simple ornament or homemade treat let the recipient know that you cared enough to take the extra time to make something special just for them.  In Southern Maryland we have plenty of gifted artisans ready and willing to share their talents through a variety of venues.  ( more... )
Whether it be a certain topping on the tree or a ceremonial carving of the holiday turkey, tradition is as much a part of Christmas as is old St. Nick himself.  With tradition in mind we invited members of our “Southern Maryland-This Is Living” family to share their favorite holiday cookie recipes, traditionally baked in their own families year after year, with you our family of subscribers.  Great-grandmothers, grandmothers, daughters and granddaughters represent generation after generation of holiday baking.  We even had a few fellows help out. From our families to yours enjoy!  ( more... )
I remember a time about 12 years ago my wife Jean, our three girls and I went out for dinner.  After dinner while Jean and I were waiting for the check my then little girls went over to look at the video games.  They didn’t have any quarters but they like to fool with the buttons and stuff.  ( more... )

For a few weekends in December the traditional holiday spirit awakens at Sotterley, a national historic landmark on the banks of the Patuxent River in St. Mary’s County.  ( more... )
