Story by Judy Colbert

“Our biggest message is we don’t just like to take care OF people, but we care ABOUT people,” says Jacqueline Miller, president of End Hunger in Calvert County. Among other programs, End Hunger offers culinary training at no cost to residents of Southern Maryland. “Whatever the behind-the-scenes reason is for their problems or situation, we care about them. The food and culinary program is the way we share that concern.”

For Retired Racers: A Soulful Search

For Retired Racers: A Soulful Search

Story by Anne Carson and Photography by Marie Lynch

The wind, slicing like a butcher’s knife off this water-bordered farm, is relentless, and photographer Marie Lynch and I hunker down in the farm’s large basement turned dog sanctuary, the headquarters of the Greyt Expectations Greyhound Rescue (GEGR) organization in Southern Maryland. Everything is here to facilitate adoption of these magnificent former racers – a large wash area; dog crates, stacked high; a lounge with computer access; a kitchen, a bathroom and meeting rooms; and dog toys, treats and medications filling every corner. Tall, heron-like greyhounds are everywhere, loving being closer than close to people and to the other greyhounds. They are quiet, elegant, soulful-eyed giants, not barky or bitey, and their lofty presence and gentle nudges awaken my emotions. The place is spilling over too with numerous devoted, gregarious volunteers and prospective adoptees, some from as far away as Woodbridge, Va., and none of them marginal about this Adoptathon. Rather, it is like being on the equator of emotions, and I’m thinking, ‘Okay, forget the cold; the fervor over these dogs will warm us up.’

Préparé avec Amour

Préparé avec Amour

Story by Anne Carson and Photography by Marie Lynch

Evening settles around the quaint town of Leonardtown in St. Mary’s County. Shadows become shades of night. All is quiet because the celebrated Café des Artistes restaurant, for 15 years the heartbeat of this town, closes on Mondays to the public. Yet, on the one night when the acclaimed chef, Loic Jaffres, could be home resting comfortably, he is instead carefully mentoring four very special young adults as they learn the delicate art of French cooking.
