Louisiana is famous for crawfish. Maine is the land of lobsters. Alaska is the state for salmon.  Mention Maryland and you’re talking crabs.  And when you’re talking crabs, you’re talking crab cakes— Maryland crab cakes. In Southern Maryland, like all over Maryland, crab cakes are a favorite.  My grandfather, W. Louis Ryon, used to say, “There’s nothing like a Southern Maryland crab cake.”  ( more... )
One of the first real chapter books I ever read was a 1970s bestseller called Dove, a true story about the youngest man ever to travel around the world alone in a 24-foot sailboat.   While the book whet my appetite for foreign travel and sailing, I would later learn while on a three-day trip aboard a 32-foot Pearson, that my severe sea sickness would end my sailing “career” as quickly as it had begun.  However, even for me, the lure and romance of sailing lives on.  And so it does for thousands of others who live in this region that nature so perfectly sculpted for sailing.  ( more... )
Mention that you are from Southern Maryland when traveling and most people will assume that you live on the Eastern Shore.  But say that you are from Solomons Island or nearby and you’ll see a glimmer of recognition in their eyes, usually followed by a statement such as, “I know where that is, we’ve had dinner there.”  So how is it that such a tiny piece of land on the southernmost tip of Calvert County can be so well known?  ( more... )
As the action progresses in the movie “Absolute Power,” Luther Whitney (Clint Eastwood) is drawn twice to Calvert Cliffs, where his estranged daughter Kate (played by Laura Linney) regularly jogs.  Movie scouting agents and film crews aren’t the only ones attracted to the multitude and variety of hiking trails and paths in Southern Maryland.  The problem isn’t whether you can find a suitable trail, but which one to pick.  ( more... )
